Fearless Interviewing

With a strategy that turns anxiety into enthusiasm, career coach Marky Stein shows job seekers how to prepare for interviews. Her seminars and book, “Fearless Interviewing: How to Win the Job by Communicating with Confidence” (McGraw-Hill 2003, $12.95, 181 pages), are designed to turn the often stressful experience of interviewing into an experience that can be controlled, productive, and successful.

Most books on interviewing contain hundreds of answers to the most common interview questions, which is fine if you have an encyclopedic memory. Stein’s system is an entirely new approach that relies on strategy instead of memory. This allows communication to be flexible and spontaneous, which puts the job seeker at ease and impresses the interviewer.

Interview questions, according to Stein, can be divided into four types, each requiring a different strategy:

* Straightforward Questions: Must be answered by providing specific details of skills and accomplishments.

* Disguised Questions: Must be examined for a hidden agenda.

* Stress Questions (such as “What is your biggest failure?”): Must be turned around and responded to with positive statements.

* Questions Asked by the Job Seeker: Must be crafted with intelligence gained from extensive research on the company.

In addition, an entire chapter is devoted to strategies for handling the first 20 seconds of an interview—that crucial time when the interviewer makes most decisions. By treating this brief time as a sort of choreographed ritual, Stein clearly spells out the verbal and nonverbal strategies that will communicate to the interviewer that you're the right person for the job.

Stein also provides basic strategies for how to dress for an interview and use language effectively. And, once the job is landed, she has strategies for how to negotiate a higher salary and (best of all situations) leverage multiple job offers. "Fearless Interviewing" will teach job seekers how to take control of an interview, alleviate anxiety, and start turning job interviews into job offers.
