Five Tips for Hiring Summer Help

Sorting out solutions for human resource (HR) issues can cost small business owners big time. If dealing with payroll, employment laws, benefits and staffing is consuming too much of your time, consider turning over some of these tasks to specialists.

Today more than 26 million Americans operate small businesses, and millions more will start small businesses over the next five years. Once their businesses begin to grow, many entrepreneurs find they need help managing employer obligations. Knowing exactly where to find the right solution for HR issues is crucial. The right help can alleviate extra responsibilities and allow business owners to focus on making successful business decisions.

“Growing a business requires access to the right connections and information to get things done,” says Daniel Kehrer, nationally syndicated business columnist and author of “The 100 Best Resources for Small Business” (BizBest Media, $19.95 at www.bizbest100.com). “I say the ‘right’ connections because much of what masquerades as resources today are either woefully out of date, superficial or advertising in disguise.”

With over 20 years of experience as a business journalist, publisher and author, Daniel Kehrer is one of America’s leading experts on small business and entrepreneurship. He writes a nationally syndicated column on small business and has been a frequent guest on business-related radio and television programs. His company, BizBest Media, publishes resources and solution information that set the standard in the industry.

As a business owner and journalist, Kehrer has spent decades sniffing out resources that can provide solutions for the unique challenges faced by small businesses. Here he offers five places small business owners can turn for help with HR issues.

1. Administaff is a professional employer organization (PEO) that provides a range of staffing services for small to mid-sized businesses, including what you may already know as employee leasing. A key goal is to provide administrative relief for busy business owners who want to spend more time building a business and less time with the employer obligations of running that business. Administaff can be the full-service human resources department most small businesses can’t afford to have themselves.

Services include employment administration, benefits management, government compliance, recruiting and selection, employer liability management, training, performance management and owner support. Administaff can be an excellent option for the small, fast-growing business that can’t afford to get bogged down in employer-related expenses and risks while sales opportunities await.

2. Employers of America, a national membership group for employers, managers and supervisors, calls itself “the boss’s association.” It helps guide and protect business owners in their role as an employer and offers a broad range of help in areas such as employee handbooks, writing job descriptions, posters and publications.

Membership ($99/year) includes Smart Workplace Practices newsletter and access to HELPlines. They also offer a free 6-week trial membership.

3. The International Virtual Assistants Association can help you find a qualified virtual assistant (VA) for your project from among its certified membership. Their Web site offers several directories that can help you find a VA by certification, location or alphabetically.

You can also submit a request and let potential VAs come to you. They also offer tips on how to strike up a successful working relationship with a virtual assistant.

4. InternshipPrograms.com lets you search a database of 250,000 internship candidates’ profiles and resumes. Business owners can easily set up an account and place free internship listings. This is one of the largest internship communities on the Web and is a great way to find and screen interns.

5. SalaryExpert.com is a super place to collect pay scale comparisons and information. It’s fast, and basic salary reports are free. You’ll receive average salary details for various jobs in your area. In addition, there are tips on negotiating salaries.

The site may also ask for additional details, such as level of skills required. Reports factor in salary info as well as benefits and cost-of-living. SalaryExpert.com also offers a range of more detailed reports for a fee.

Don’t get bogged down in employer obligations or wrapped up with a resource that can’t get the job done. Find the right resources for your HR needs and turn your attention back to where it belongs—your business.
